Sporobolus airoides Perennial, warm, native, poor grazing for wildlife, fair grazing for livestock. 1-3' tall, coarse-stemmed growing in tough clumps (no rhizomes). The long slender blades are hairy at the throat. The panicle is pyramid-shaped and loosely flowered. One-flowered spikelets are on short pedicels. Grows in meadows and valleys, especially in alkaline soil. Desirable grass to seed in salted out sites. Relished by jackrabbits. Areas 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. |
Spartina spartinae Perennial, warm, native, poor grazing for wildlife, fair grazing for livestock. 3-6' tall with stout, coarse stems growing from a crown of dense tufts. The leaf blades are narrow and the edges roll inward making them appear as a heavy cord. The inflorescence is short and compact making it appear as a cylinder. The florets are close fitted together on opposite sides of the axis. The glumes have short bristly hairs on the margin. Grows abundantly on saline soils. Areas 2, 6. |
