These can be found on sandy soil and along edges of roads, old fields, ditch banks, hay fields and improved pastures. Sandburs are hard to control except with management practices that promote vigorous competition from more desirable perennial plants. Spot treatment with herbicides such as Roundup® may prevent small areas in right-of-ways from spreading into disturbed rangeland.
