Cougar Predation - Photos

This is the front foot of a 125-pound male cougar. Note the distinct characteristics of the toes and the rear pad. This is a male cougar track in the mud. Note the distinct characteristics. This is a cougar scratch in snow at which the cougar defecated and urinated. This appears to be a territorial activity along cougar travelways, particulary by males.
The pile of leaves in the center were scratched up by a male cougar near a kill. This may be a territorial marker. The tracks in this photo which straddle the drag marks were made by the front feet of a male cougar as it dragged a deer carcass to cover for feeding. it is relatively common behavior for cougars to drag their kills into cover for seclusion while feeding. This is the carcass of a male mule deer that was killed, fed upon and partially covered by a cougar. "Caching" by cougars is a relatively common occurrence with larger prey.
