Area of emphasis

Deer

White-tailed and mule deer are the two most important big game species in west Texas. Research and Extension programs that I've conducted on these species include census techniques, herd managment, supplemental feeding and habitat managment.

Quail

There are four species of quail found in Texas, but by far the two most common are the bobwhite and the scaled quail. Extension programs that I've conducted on quail include the popular Bobwhite Brigade, a quail boot camp for high school youth, and various programs on managing quail habitat.

Current research topics include quail response to prescibed burning nest depredation ecology, and reproductive ecology.

Predators

Predators are often controversial in west Texas, especially the coyote. Check out predator programs like Predator Awareness Workshop and the recent Coyotes in the SouthWest symposium. Several videos have been produced including the award winning "A Matter of Perspective." A current project called Predators in the Classroom is being designed to provide factual, unbiased information on predators to fourth graders. Other predators addressed include feral hogs, bobcats and raptors.

4-H and Youth

Youth-related education accounts for about 20% of my time. Major projects include The Bobwhite Brigade, Trans-Pecos 4-H Wildlife Camp and conservation field days for the schools. The Predators in the Classroom is scheduled to be pilot tested in October 1996.

Hobbies

Hunting

I enjoy hunting anything that can be called up, including turkeys, predators and deer. I also enjoy quail hunting with my two Lewellyn setters, Suzie and Doc.

Wildlife photography

I also enjoy "shooting with a shutter" and spend much of my hunting these days toting a 35 mm or camcorder. Some of my favorite critters to videotape or photograph include coyotes, quail, raccoons and sunsets. I've also been using Trailmaster camera systems to obtain some very candid shots of deer, raccoons, foxes, and other critters.
